ABOUT
Artist Statement
My work is an exploration of pure abstraction, employing a carefully curated palette of colours and simple geometric shapes to create compositions that evoke specific emotions - be it tension, harmony, or joy. I often work within a limited colour scheme, using no more than six colours in a piece, applied flatly or with airbrushed gradients. The interplay of bold, complementary colours creates a vibrant, sometimes physically affecting experience on the canvas.
A key element in my practice is the incorporation of optical illusions. I use black-and-white patterns and manipulate angles to create false perspectives, challenging the viewer’s perception of depth and space. This visual trickery is central to my artistic intention: I aim to lure the viewer into a world that appears bright, colourful, and inviting, only to reveal a more complex, perhaps even sinister, reality upon closer inspection.
This duality in my work serves as a metaphor for Western society and the pervasive influence of American hegemony - or more broadly, capitalism. I deliberately employ aesthetics borrowed from commercialism and mass media: signage, logos, icons, and digital rendering styles that have become ubiquitous in our daily lives. There’s an instructional quality to my paintings, reminiscent of Ikea manuals or aeroplane safety cards, speaking a universal language of shapes and colours.
While my creative process often begins with contemplation of weighty global issues - technology, AI, global trade, war, political establishments, climate change - I approach these topics with a sense of lightness and even humour. This reflects my dichotomy: I am deeply concerned about the forces shaping our world, yet I present a fun, happy exterior.
My influences are diverse, ranging from art historical figures like Stuart Davis, Andy Warhol, Bridget Riley, Frank Stella, and Peter Halley, to architects and designers of the mid-century modern and postmodern eras. My background in motion graphics and branding design in the U.S., along with the work of graphic designer Paul Rand, significantly informs my aesthetic. As a product of the ‘80s and ‘90s, pop culture, television, and music - particularly through the lens of my identity as a gay man - infuse my work with an undercurrent of camp, silliness, and joy.
My creative process typically begins with pencil drawings on paper, where I explore shapes and visual language. I then move to digital tools to refine forms and colour choices, allowing for rapid experimentation. The final step involves transferring the design to canvas, where I make decisions about texture, layering, and the degree of visible human touch in the work.
Through my art, I invite viewers to engage with complex contemporary issues through a lens that is at once critical and playful, familiar yet disorienting, bright on the surface but with depths to be explored.
